Republic and Esen Unveil Visionary Plaza Midwood Development Set to Reshape Charlotte's Historic District

Charlotte's historic Plaza Midwood neighborhood, celebrated for its blend of cultural richness and vibrant streetcar heritage, stands on the cusp of an innovative transformation. The Republic Family of Companies, through its local arm Republic Development Group, in a robust partnership with Esen, has unveiled plans for a new mixed-use development at 700 and 800 Central Avenue. This strategic joint venture aims to fuse the old with the new by introducing approximately 370 multifamily units complemented by 3,000 square feet of coveted ground-floor retail space.

Slated to commence in mid-2026, the construction of this development is a testament to the foresight of two transformative real estate firms. Adam McMichael, Managing Director and Charlotte Lead for Republic, remarked on the project's significance, stating, "We are thrilled to bring a project of this caliber to Plaza Midwood, a neighborhood that offers historic charm within reach of Charlotte's economic center. Charlotte's demand for well-located, thoughtfully crafted housing continues to grow, and this project answers that need. For us, this is about more than building housing; it's about welcoming new residents to one of the Southeast's most desirable neighborhoods."

The selection of the site at Central Ave and Piedmont St is particularly poignant, paying homage to the roots of Plaza Midwood as Charlotte's inaugural "streetcar suburb." By integrating modern living demands with pedestrian-friendly amenities, the project seeks to enhance the already robust desirability of the area.

Republic brings to the table an array of industry expertise under the leadership of Richard Kramer, with a portfolio encompassing Republic Properties Corporation and Republic Urban Properties. Esen, a nascent venture spearheaded by experienced developers, aligns with Republic's commitment to purpose-driven, urban development.

Dave Boillot, Chief Investment Officer of Esen, echoes the collaborative spirit driving this venture, saying, "This partnership between Republic and Esen reflects a shared belief in Charlotte's future and a shared vision for this site. We are incredibly excited to enter the Charlotte market alongside a partner with Republic's track record. We believe our Central Avenue project will set a new standard for living in Plaza Midwood."

As Republic and Esen unite to transform Charlotte's Central Avenue corridor, their project stands poised to not just meet the escalating demand for multifamily living, but to rewrite the narrative of community integration, honoring history while embracing progress. It is a bold step indicating the strategic investment in, and the enduring appeal of, one of Charlotte's most storied neighborhoods.
