Monarch at Redwood Launches Construction: A New Chapter in Affordable Housing for San Mateo County

Affirmed Housing has officially begun construction on Monarch at Redwood, a new affordable housing community in San Mateo County's North Fair Oaks neighborhood. This $70.4 million project is set to provide sustainable living options for households earning less than 60% of the area median income. Upon completion, Monarch will offer 86 apartment homes, integrating environmentally conscious design and practical amenities.

San Mateo County District 4 Supervisor Lisa Gauthier expressed her endorsement, stating, "I'm so proud that Monarch at Redwood is in my district and in my backyard! In a region where affordability is becoming increasingly rare, this project shows what's possible when the County, community, and development partners come together with shared values and purpose."

The six-story development is primed to enhance the North Fair Oaks area by offering a range of apartments, from studios to three-bedroom units. Notably, 39 apartments are reserved as Permanent Supportive Housing for participants in Healthy Housing California and Mental Health Services Act programs, addressing the crucial need for housing among the most vulnerable populations.

Jimmy Silverwood, president at Affirmed Housing, remarked, "Our goal with Monarch is to strengthen North Fair Oaks by providing housing and support that allow residents to stay close to friends, schools, and the local businesses, keeping the heart of the community vibrant and inclusive. This project will create homes where people can truly put down roots. We're grateful to all our partners who share this vision and help make it possible."

The development is designed with eco-friendly features, such as Energy Star-rated appliances and rooftop solar panels, to curb utility costs. Shared amenities cater to modern living, including bike storage, onsite laundry, and spaces for community engagement. Strategically located in a high resource area, Monarch offers unbeatable access to external conveniences like public transport and local shopping.

Additionally, residents will benefit from adult education programs designed to foster job training and career development, alongside health and wellness. Those with mental and health challenges will have access to on-site coordinators and an extensive network of support services provided by local organizations such as the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County.

Monarch's funding represents a joint effort among industry key players like Lument, Redstone Equity Partners, First Citizens Bank, and other notable partners. With a team that includes HA Builder Group, Van Meter Williams Pollack, BKF Engineers, DCI Engineers, and Jett Landscape Architecture + Design, Monarch is anticipated to be a cornerstone for community development and a beacon for affordable housing innovation.
