Linc Housing Completes Project Homekey Renovations to Combat Homelessness in Long Beach

Linc Housing, a non-profit developer in Long Beach, recently rang in the completion of substantial renovations at two significant Project Homekey sites: Zephyr and Crescent. These refurbished properties represent beacon projects in the fight against homelessness—a fight that is gaining momentum through smart collaborations and effective use of existing resources in California.

With homelessness rates on an alarming rise, with Long Beach recording a 6.5% uptick to a total of 3,595 people without a home, the opening of Zephyr and Crescent couldn't come at a more critical time. The transformation of these former motels into 177 permanent, service-enriched apartments is a testament to the power of swift action and strategic partnerships. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn commended the initiative, stating, "The State's Project Homekey program has been a game changer for us. By partnering with Linc Housing and using state funding to convert these two buildings, we have 177 new apartments for the people who most need them in Long Beach."

The collaboration between entities such as the City of Long Beach and Los Angeles County unearths the undeniable potential of public-private synergies. By refurbishing existing structures and swiftly adapting them into service-providing homes, organizations are showcasing the effectiveness of innovative approaches to long-standing social challenges.

Meanwhile, at the heart of this project are the tangible life changes for residents like Lashawn, an example of resilience and determination amid adversity. The personal transformations matching those of their new homes suggest a brighter future is indeed possible with the aid of enhanced infrastructure and community support.

It is worth noting that the funding architecture behind these projects is as elaborate as it is diversified. The inception of these developments was primarily underpinned by Project Homekey funds, further bolstered by other sources such as the American Rescue Plan Act and various financial institutions.

At Multifamily Leadership, we closely observe how livable space innovations permeate the fabric of community well-being. As stated by Suny Lay Chang of Linc Housing, these projects encapsulate a proactive stance against housing disparities: "Together, Zephyr and Crescent demonstrate how Long Beach and Los Angeles County are leveraging Project Homekey to tackle the region's housing shortage head-on, creating pathways to healing, belonging, and hope."

With the multifamily sector at the crossroads of innovation and humane necessity, witnessing the operational prowess and benevolent impact when partnerships are focused on common good has never been more invigorating. We eagerly anticipate watching how these newly minted communities bolster the fight for stable housing, and how they move the dial toward home for those who need it most.
