Atlas Unveiled: Linc Housing Launches Bold Step Against LA Homelessness with Project Homekey

In a momentous stride for affordable housing in Los Angeles, Linc Housing has unveiled Atlas, an innovative affordable and supportive housing community aimed at tackling homelessness. Celebrations marked the grand opening of the 127-home complex, where a mix of 60 dwellings for the chronically homeless and 66 for those at risk of homelessness showcases a dual strategy of immediate relief and preemptive action.

The project reverberates with hope, aptly named after the Atlas butterfly, a symbol of transformation. In the spirit of rebirth, Atlas stands as Linc's first successful venture under California's Project Homekey, turning underutilized properties into vital long-term housing solutions.

Rebecca Clark, CEO of Linc Housing, highlighted the unique collaborative effort, stating, "Atlas embodies the power of collaboration. Thanks to Governor Newsom's Project Homekey initiative, and the commitment of the state, city, and county, we're able to bring more of the housing and services that people urgently need. At Linc, we know that solving homelessness requires both providing homes for people already on the streets and preventing others from losing their housing. Atlas does both."

Communities thrive when collaboration drives innovation. Atlas is a testament to that, seamlessly transforming a once-vacant market-rate building into a sanctuary teeming with community amenities, including a community room, case management offices, and inviting outdoor spaces.

The role of HACLA has been pivotal, offering a stable financing environment for residents through project-based Section 8 vouchers, while the City of Los Angeles and the State Homekey funding have powered the purchase itself. "Without rental support, too many Angelenos risk falling into homelessness simply because market rents are out of reach," commented Lourdes Castro Ramírez, President & CEO of HACLA.

On the frontlines of prevention is the County Department of Health Services’ Housing for Health program, which champions predictive analytics to fortify homelessness prevention and offers expansive wraparound services, encapsulating physical, mental, and employment support among others for those from the streets, as well as community integration for all residents.

Roderick, one of Atlas' newest residents, stands as a beacon of the substantial impact of housing security witnessing firsthand, the stabilizing force of a home. "This new home has changed my life tremendously," he shared. "I'm stable now, and I get to see my mom every day. I finally feel like I can build a future."

With revolutionary support from entities like Project Homekey, LAHD, and others contributing various funds, Atlas's composition – from May 2024's renovations to the constructive efforts of Y&M Architects and T. Morrissey Corporation – demonstrates that a strategic, multifaceted approach to housing can lay the groundwork for communal prosperity and individual transformation.
