Alameda Celebrates Opening of Estuary I and Linnet Corner, Advancing North Housing Master Plan

In a milestone event for the Alameda community, the Housing Authority of the City of Alameda (AHA) proudly opened the doors to Estuary I and Linnet Corner, marking a significant step forward in their ambitious North Housing Master Plan. The Grand Opening celebrated the culmination of over a decade of meticulous planning and coordination, creating a place residents can proudly call home.

With construction commencing in early 2024, Estuary I and Linnet Corner have now introduced 109 affordable rental homes into the Alameda housing market. Demonstrating firm commitment and tangible progress, the AHA, alongside Island City Development, aims to add over 500+ affordable rental homes to serve the low-income community in the area.

These residences breathe new life into the twelve acres of land at the former US Naval Air Station—a testament to the transformative power of partnership between the public and private sector. The strategic allocation through the Surplus Land Act emphasizes the ongoing need for collaboration in addressing housing challenges.

Broadening the scope of community support, Estuary I, Alameda’s first new construction project dedicated entirely to permanent supportive housing, has welcomed a diverse mix of residents including those previously homeless. The fully occupied 45 units underscore AHA's deep understanding of nuanced community needs.

In parallel, Linnet Corner resonates with Alameda’s commitment to its esteemed senior and veteran population. With a substantial portion of apartments designated for senior veterans who have faced homelessness or disability, Linnet Corner is nourishing roots for a critical segment of the population.

The involvement of major financial institutions is a cornerstone of this endeavor. Kerry Deichen from Bank of America N.A., a significant funder, remarked on the project's collaborative strength, stating, "It's so exciting to be part of the incredible transformation of the former Naval Air Station into much-needed affordable housing and supportive services for working families, seniors, and formerly homeless individuals."

This development not only embodies the public-private partnership model but also highlights the multifaceted financial orchestration required for such initiatives. The project's scale of funding — encompassing state, county, and private funders — is central to realizing the vision for a diverse and inclusive community.

AHA's financial commitment is evident through an $8.6 million investment and the allocation of valuable Project Based Vouchers. Vanessa Cooper, AHA Executive Director, affirmed the Housing Authority’s dedication, expressing excitement at the fruition of years of effort to meet the urgent housing needs of various vulnerable groups.

The Estuary I and Linnet Corner projects set a shining example of what is achievable in affordable housing through sustained commitment, strategic alliances, and a deep understanding of community needs. This serves as a launching pad for further innovation and development in Alameda, ultimately enriching the lives of its residents and fortifying the city's social fabric.
